Giant Batteries for 2000 households
August 24th 2011 06:44
It is very interesting to see that 20 MWh giant batteries will be built to supply up to 2000 households for the raining days in near future. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany are working on redox flow batteries to hold the key to further the uptake of wind and solar power.
A flow battery is a form of rechargeable battery in which electrolyte containing one or more dissolved electroactive species flows through an electrochemical cell that converts chemical energy directly to electricity. For Redox (reduction-oxidation) flow battery, all electroactive components are dissolved in the electrolyte.
The redox flow battery using a 2-kW plant is already demonstrated. A 20-kW plant is scheduled to go into operation at the end of next year. A large scale economical energy storage solution is expected in near future. The disadvantage of solar energy in cloudy days will be solved by giant batteries.
