Largest Black Holes are discovered
February 12th 2012 17:57
A black hole is a region of space-time from which nothing, not even light, can escape. According to general relativity, a sufficiently compact mass will deform space-time to form a black hole. With various types of telescopes, black holes can be studied through observing areas of space which have stars that are close to black holes.
Two largest black holes are discovered by the scientists at the University of California at Berkeley. These black holes are 300 million light-years away from us and 10 billion times more massive than our sun. The previous record of the largest black mass is 6 billion times of our Sun.
Having an understanding of blackholes helps us to understand the most fundamental forces in the universe, the formation of stars and galaxies, and space-time.
