The travel speed of gravity
November 27th 2011 02:27
The speed of gravitational waves in the general theory of relativity is equal to the speed of light. We should be careful about the static of the field and the change of the field. As the gravitational field of the Sun is already everywhere (static), we can feel the Sun gravity in no delay. But when the mass of the Sun changes, we can feel the change in the speed of light. The experimental measurement of the travel speed of gravity still has a high uncertainty.
Why is the speed of gravity exactly the same as the speed of light? Is there connection between gravity and electromagnetic force? The video below is quite interesting. Bill Gaede pointed out that Newton is a mathematician, not a scientist. Newton laws used space, time and motion. But Newton did not know what is space and time. Space and time are just mathematical concept. Einstein is a mathematician too. He used the beauty of mathematics to set up the physics law. He denied the Quantum mechanics as he believed that God does not play dice. He tried to derive unified field theory.
Mathematics is just a concept and framework how we understand the world. Mathematics evolves. In future, we may see that Einstein is wrong. For example recent experiments showed that the neutrino speed may be faster than the light.
