The Truth about Organic Food
August 6th 2009 01:02
Over three fifths of the United States population purchases organic food regularly—spending nearly fourteen billion dollars on organic products. Unaware to the general population is the fact that organic foods sometimes cost double and even triple the amount of regular, locally grown food.
So, is organic food really better than locally grow/regular food? This was a question which prompted researchers to conduct over fifty quality studies in the topic of organic food over the past fifty years. Now, half a century later, researchers including London’s public health nutritionist Alan Dangour are reanalyzing these documents to provide a better general image of the benefits of organic food.
According to their studies released in a scientific journal a few days ago, organic food does NOT offer any substantial visible benefits. Their report also states that organic food does not hold any nutritional improvements over non-organic food. In fact locally grown food may even be better because of its decreased transportation time [thus increasing freshness].
However, there is not an absence of reports which support the fact that organic foods are more nutritious and healthier than regularly grown food. In fact a four year long study funded by the European Union came to a conclusion last April stating that organic milk has 60 percent more antioxidants than regular non-organic milk. It also mentions that organic milk have more healthy fatty acids than conventional milk.
Therefore, the benefits of organic food can be viewed both ways. Either you can accept it as being better than regularly grown food or you can say that it is no different than regularly grown food. It all depends on which studies you view.
