What is time and space before the birth of the universe?
February 18th 2011 00:02
Big Bang theory tells us that approximately 13.7 billion years ago, our universe was created from the confines of an atomic nucleus. Before this moment, the space and time did not exist.
Does this make sense?
Let's first think about the chicken or the egg causality dilemma, i.e. "which came first, the chicken or the egg?". Before the evolution theory, we always that we need a creator! But who creates the creator?
This theory has a hole. So is the big bang theory. It can not explain the time before the start of time.
Darwin's theory of evolution states that species change over time via mutation and selection. Both the egg and the chicken evolved simultaneously from birds that were not chickens and did not lay chicken eggs but gradually became more and more like chickens over time.
Now we don't need a creator.
How to fix the time hole in the big bang theory?
Let's think about general theory of relativity and quantum physics. According to the general theory of relativity, reality is always uniquely determined similar to classical mechanics. According to quantum physics, one may only gain a rough understanding of nature. A prediction can only be made with a probability. Its precision being limited by inherent properties.
But quantum physics has a hole. How can a cat either life and death?
Is it possible that a cat disappear in front of you suddenly? According to quantum physics, it is possible. As the matter is a wave at the same time, the cat in front of you is just with a high probability. It is possible to appear in other place with very low possibility (still possible). If your cat size is the same as an atom, you can not predict when the cat in front of you.
This concept is not as beautiful as Newton law. It is complicate and not straightforward.
Let's come to the simple idea of extra dimension. We can not predict the atom position due to that it is very easy to travel to extra dimension. As the mass increases, traveling to extra dimension becomes difficult. Reality is uniquely determined again after we add extra dimension.
Return to the topic: What is time and space before the birth of the universe? I can not tell you the answer until we fully understand the extra dimension. Analog to that we don't know "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" until we discovered the theory of evolution.
